Rock's Philosophy 101

Rock's Philosophy 101

It's all temporary.

Try to enjoy yourself.

Don't shit where you eat.

Whether you believe you can or you believe
you can't, you're probably right.

Don't trust the government.

Persistence trumps all.

Ignorance is not a virtue. Never stop learning.

If you expect to be appreciated,
it isn't love, it's barter.

Being happy is more important than being right.

Never call a lady cop "Fatboy".

Karma hates assholes.

Choose your battles wisely, your friends even more so.

Don't throw good time after bad.

People treat you the way that you teach them too.

Don't wait for people who
aren't going to be there for you.

If you change the way you think,
it changes the way you feel.

Don't take yourself too seriously.

Big you, little me.

Argue your limitations and they are yours.

Religion is a dangerous crutch.

Those who have the gold make the rules.
Get some gold.

There is no shortage of stupidity. Be prepared.

Be a spendthrift with love.

We only get one go around. Make the best of it.

You can't take it with you, not even longevity awards.

Our children are our greatest teachers.

As soon as you know that you're wrong, admit it.
They'll get over it or you'll get over them.

No one here gets out alive.

Relationships of convenience can cost the most.

Music tells the story of our lives.

You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose,
but you can't pick your friend's nose.

The best is yet to come.

Every Day Concealed Carry

I picked up an XDs 9mm 4.0" about an month ago and I couldn't be happier with it. It fits snug, conceals easily, and shoots like a much bigger gun. It's small enough that I don't have to dress around it with just an IWB holster, T-shirt, and cargo shorts. It is a year round EDC pistol. People yammer on about higher capacity, but I am no longer an active duty sailor, soldier, or LEO. I am a civilian with a CWP. My job is not to rush into danger, but to survive it and extricate myself and my loved ones as quickly and efficiently as possible, If I cannot do that with two magazines and a total of 15 rounds, I probably don't deserve too. Except in the movies and zombie/Rambo fantasies, law abiding civilians with good situational awareness and common sense about their haunts and activities do not get into firefights requiring more rounds than that. I keep another 100 rounds in my glove box and 100 more in my bug out bag if I needed to get home in a SHTF scenario.

If someone comes into my house uninvited, I already know I have a threat/problem, and you can expect my FN FNS-9 housegun to have 18 rounds in it and more waiting. I just read a very enlightening articles on handgun stopping power. As a former LEO, soldier, and sailor, and once again a civilian CWP, it was a big paradigm shift. I have house guns and concealed carry guns and tended to put the same defensive ammo in both.

Now I'll think twice. Mindset.

Chronic Likers: A Facebook Page Admin's Dilemma

When you are a webmaster or an admin (administrator) for a facebook page or group, new members are greatly appreciated. In fact they are your life's blood and reason for being there, whether you're there to make a profit or not. Unfortunately, some tend to suffer from hero worship-like tendencies and be underfoot like a litter of puppies fresh from their nap. They willfully and wantonly like each and every single post, picture, edit, and reply as quickly as their mouse ("Clicker" in Liker lingo) will allow.

As an Admin, you get notified of each and every comment, post, or like. When your phone tells you you have 72 facebook notifications and 60+ are from one guy in the last fifteen minutes (who could not possibly have read all of the posts and visited the links that he liked and LOLed) he does as much damage to your productivity and peace of mind as a troll. You have to look at each one from him and everyone else to keep the page or group from blowing up. Are they mentally ill, cyber-stalkers, drunk, high, ignorant newbies, needy, or trolls? It seems like a genuine compulsion. I manage several groups, pages, and sites and see it regularly. Far, far, far too regularly. I call it the New Best Friend Syndrome. These chosen ones are the newly converted.

I have had people get furious when I politely and diplomatically  explained about the notifications and asked them to curb their enthusiasm. (Please LIKE all of my blog posts, subscribe, share them, and tell all of your friends to subscribe! That's different!)

Other than mental illness, I can't explain it. Often these folks will have less than a hundred facebook friends, but seem to be at it around the clock. I guess it beats playing solitaire and it does get someone's attention.

How do you vent your frustration without coming across as ungrateful (or unhinged)?

Cognitive Dissonance, Ignosticism, Logic, and Questions About God

I spent a great deal of my life studying religion and philosophy and searching for truth. It turns out that disproof is far easier than proof to find in those realms. After having been a Unitarian, an atheist, and a Christian, and studying numerous religions while visiting churches of many faiths and denominations, temples (Buddhist, Jewish, Baha'i), mosques, fellowships, supposed cults, and sometimes who knows what, I have embraced Ignosticism. To me, it became the only honest and intelligent choice.

I am an atheist; I do not believe in god/s. I am an agnostic; I do not know if any gods exist. I am an Ignostic: I have no evidence that god/s can be defined, explained, or recognized by human beings if said gods exist, and if they do and want to interact, they (He, She, It, They) will make their presence undeniably known to human kind in no uncertain terms. Below are some tools to rational thinking that have been useful and extremely interesting.

This is a great web site that explains logical fallacies. I wish the study of it was mandatory for any adult wishing to have potentially intelligent discussions. I'm not seeking to debate with or deconvert anyone, just sharing part of my path that I think can be beneficial to anyone with an open mind who is trying to discover truth.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; for even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable." - Kahil Gibran, The Prophet

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. . . "Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist-a master-and that is what Auguste Rodin was-can look at an old woman, portray her exactly as she is...and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be...and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply imprisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart...no matter what the merciless hours have done to her. Look at her, Ben. Growing old doesn't matter to you and me; we were never meant to be admired-but it does to them."

“Love is a temporary madness; it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of eternal passion. That is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.” - Louis de Bernieres

Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history." - Robert A. Heinlein

"By all means marry. If you get a good wife you will become happy, and if you get a bad one you will become a philosopher." - Socrates

"Theology is never any help; it is searching in a dark cellar at midnight for a black cat that isn't there. Theologians can persuade themselves of anything." - Robert A. Heinlein

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find anything that agrees with reason and is conductive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." - Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha)

“Heresy," by the way, simply means "choice." It came to mean "thoughtcrime," implying it was blasphemy to presume to choose your own belief instead of swallowing what the bishops spoonfed you.” - Robert M. Price

"All great truths begin as blasphemies." —George Bernard Shaw

"The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more." - Christopher Hitchens

"There is nothing so passionate as a vested interest disguised as an intellectual conviction." - Frank Herbert

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here." - Richard Dawkins

Welcome to Pariahville, Bitches.

I'm a libertarian. I'm also an atheist. That breaks down to my believing in maximum freedom, minimum government, and not believing in any gods. This puts me in a very, very, very small minority.

Libertarian Atheists are modern day pariahs. We are the equivalent of self-made lepers, rejected violently by almost all others, including the apolitical and the irreligious. Why anyone would join this twisted little fraternity is beyond me. I think its like being gay: you never really had a choice and pretending to be anything else is excruciating.

I have a lot of days that I wish I could go back to paying no attention and not giving a rat's ass. When I was in my early twenties, i was profoundly cursed by a quote from Plate. "The Unexamined Life is not worth living." Using reason, logic, and science, I have sought truth ever since and it is indeed a wicked master. Sadly, to paraphrase John Milton, "Ignorance, once lost can never be regained."
I think my biggest struggle is to not become jaded, arrogant, or hostile and to not self-ostracize. When dealing with others, I cling, perhaps too tightly, to the idea that their problem is not intelligence, education, or lack of enlightenment, but being in the clutches of cognitive dissonance. It hasn't seemed to get me very far, as of yet.

Nevertheless, I will not hide from the truth. I do believe it shall set us free, even if it will hunt us down and kill us afterward.

Criminal Health & Fitness Pre-Fight Waiver

To Our Growing Criminal Population and Innocent Until Proven Guilty Suspected Criminal Population,

It has came to the attention of Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement via the Liberal Media and Socialist elements of our government that a large number of you are dying at the hands of the police. This isn't so much due to police brutality, profiling, or an increase in tyrannical and oppressive laws, but simply because as a result of your Life of Crime™ you just haven't been taking care of yourselves the way you should have. This is starting to really make us look bad. Therefore, as much as we hate to do it, beginning immediately, we are going to have to require you to sign a Criminal Health & Fitness Pre-Fight Waiver before fighting the police if you suffer from high blood pressure, obesity, heart problems, drug addled confusion, 90 Proof Courage, gross stupidity, or any other physical, mental, or emotional issues that might affect your health during or after an altercation with law enforcement officials.

Rest assured, we wish to make this transaction as easy for you as possible. You can request and sign the waiver anytime you interact with the police. Alternatively, you can ask your probation or parole officer or stop by your local law enforcement center. While you're there, it would be greatly appreciated if you would sign our pledge not to bring any illegally concealed firearms into any government offices, VA Hospitals, local businesses, churches, homes, schools, or other gun free zones marked by odious No Concealed Firearms sign. Surely if law abiding citizens can abide by this and be publicly disarmed of their own volition, then you are all big enough badasses that you won't need guns either. Your cooperation is appreciated.

In the totally unspeakably, unlikely event that we do not receive full, immediate, and 100% total cooperation on this, we will be forced to humbly request that you take a petition around and get at least a hundred signatures before looting and burning down your local neighborhood businesses, and (yes, we'll be playing hardball in this event) you'll need to have a permission slip from your mother before participating.

Please notice when filling out the new politically correct waivers that there are no boxes to indicate race. You can now choose your own stereotype and act as you see fit. If you have any questions, please address them to Reverend Jesse Jackson for prayer and spiritual advice and Al Sharpton, Esq. for legal or tax advice. Unless you're White, Hispanic, or Asian, then you're on your own.

Let's be careful out there.

I ♥ Being Human

My brother shared a cool video of a fantastic gymnast from a facebook newsource called "I Being Black". I didn't get it. Yes, he happened to be Black. Is that why he is a good gymnast? I don't see the purpose of attributing the one to the other. If I did that I'd be a racist. If I said, "Its a great day to be White!" People would chose to be offended as if that automatically inferred being anything other than White was inferior. I wondered if there was a dumbass "I Being White" facebook page or group too. Of course there was. I can call the White one dumbass, but not the Black one.

Pride in pigmentation? Like its an accomplishment or a gift? Did any of us do anything pre-life to deserve to be born a particular race or in a particular place, like one is a reward and all others are a punishment? Is it going along the whole "sins of the father" biblical bit?

Funny, I didn't think Black or White was a race, or a heritage. I like to joke that with all of my tattoos, I've been colored since I was seventeen.

I Being Human. Its kind of nice most days, even if the company tends to suck at times.

Big Honking Bible Basher

First of all, I have Christians, atheists, Jews, Deists, and Muslims in my family, so "interesting" conversations can take place at any time. My friends are even more diverse. I am an Ignostic Humanist.

Last night I met with my daughter and ex-wife for them to get tattoos. They'd decided on a bible verse for both of them. I said I didn't understand why Christians got bible verses tattooed on them when Jesus said not to pray in public. Both said He didn't say that. I shared the verse with them on facebook when I got home; Matthew 6:5-6: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men....when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret...."

My brother, Mike, another Christian, then commented, "Let's play devils advocate for a second and assume there is no God, Rock. Do you really think you're helping people or being a good friend or good father by bashing Him everyday online?"

I replied, "Define bashing. I said last night that I didn't understand why people get bible verses tattooed on them when Jesus said not to pray publicly. Lisa and Raeny both said he didn't say that. I shared the verse. I didn't bash anyone.

If there is no God wouldn't you want to know? If you wore a big heavy parachute 24/7 for years in case you ever had to jump out of a plane and then one day someone had you open it and look inside and you found out it wasn't a parachute after all, but a backpack full of comic books, wouldn't you be glad you hadn't waited until you jumped out of a plane to find out and be happy to know the truth and stay away from planes as much as possible?"

I believe the truth does set us free and that it demands empirical evidence. How is this bashing?

I have said for many years that I believe a parent's job is to make themselves unnecessary to thier children. Most people would agree with that statement, but if I applied it to the bible then I would be bashing God. According to the bible, God, in His perfection, created man exactly how He wanted him, flawed and capable of sin. Did God take a gamble and hope that even though He gave man Free Will that man would never exercise it? It wasn't a gamble if He is All Knowing. If you believe God is All Knowing, then He created man flawed and then blamed man and gave him a punishment of eternal torment if he didn't remain entirely dependent on Him for everything. How is that good parenting? Social Services would've taken us away long before the bible got to Leviticus.

I love my child. She is now a legal adult and she still makes mistakes. I hope that I have guided her well enough that there won't be too many that are tremendously life altering. When our children are young, we try to protect them from the world. When they become teenagers, we try to protect them from themselves. We don't lock them in a tiny room, turn them into ever obedient slaves, and try to hide them from the world.

I have a dog, Girly, that I love too. I feed her, provide her shelter, take care of her medical needs, walk her numerous times a day, and try to keep the fleas at bay. She is bright, funny, loving, very eager to please, but still a dog. She'll bark at the wrong people, wants to chase squirrels, and gets excited over stuff only dogs understand. I still love her company and accept that she is a dog. However, she is my property and responsibility, not my child. Its a whole different set of expectations, rules, and liabilities.

Which set of  expectations, rules, and liabilities does God DEMAND in the bible, the ones we give our children or the ones we give our property?

These are just aspects of what I see as a morally and intellectually flawed religion due to its doctrine and dogma. It has nothing to do with what I believe about the inerrancy of the bible or the existence of one or many gods. Separate discussion there.

If you are going to argue in favor of the bible, you should read and study it first. Unfortunately when you aren't being instructed as to which parts to read and how to interpret them by people making their living telling you where, when, how, what, and why to believe, it tends to fall apart and create more anti-theists than believers. That's why so many young adults become atheists in college when away from home for the first time. It isn't temptation, its intellectual freedom.

If asking intelligent questions is bible bashing, then I am a big honking bible basher. My intent is to seek the truth, wherever I may find it, no matter how uncomfortable it or the journey might be. Plato said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." I think that has to apply to faith as well as the rest of it.
